2015 MLB Season Preview: Straying From the Status Quo: A Sabermetrically Optimized Look at Opening Day Lineups – Part 3 NL West

Part 3 has us taking a glance at the opening day lineups and optimized lineups for the National League West Division teams: Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, San Diego Padres, Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks.

From the information gathered on this particular division, it seems a lot of the teams have (somewhat) similar lineups (comparing opening day to optimized). The one consistent theme, intriguingly, is that the “best hitter” on each team (ie: Goldschmidt, Puig, Tulowitzki, Upton, Posey) find themselves in the leadoff spot for the optimized lineup. This is because the top all-around hitters on each team usually carry a high OBP with them. Having these players leadoff for their respective team though would be deemed unusual and doesn’t happen often in the MLB today. However, perhaps it is worth a try.

Next we will switch on over to the American League and take a look at the AL West Division.
